What does "PoE power budget" mean?

A PoE power budget is the total wattage a switch can distribute across all its powered ports at once, distinct from the per-port maximum rating. Calculate it by summing each device's PD maximum wattage and adding a cable-loss and safety buffer per IEEE 802.3bt guidance.

PoE+ (802.3at, Type 2) runs at a standard nominal voltage, similar to standard PoE. Voltage under load can sag below the nominal figure on long or poor-quality cable runs, which is exactly what field load testing is designed to catch.

How much power does PoE need?

It depends entirely on the standard and the device class: Type 1 delivers about 12.95 watts to the PD, Type 2 about 25.5 watts, and Type 3/4 up to 51 or 71 watts respectively using four-pair delivery, according to the Ethernet Alliance's 802.3bt overview. Always plan against the device's PD maximum wattage from its datasheet, not a generic per-class assumption.

Should I plan for max wattage or negotiated wattage?

Plan for PD maximum wattage unless you have a confirmed negotiated value from LLDP or CDP telemetry for that specific device model. Negotiated draw can run lower in normal operation, but spikes during startup, heater cycles, or PTZ movement can push a device close to its rated maximum, and a budget built on optimistic negotiated numbers has no room for that.
